Notes from the Flower Field — April 2026

Hello everyone 💐

A wee hello from the farm — and a quick sorry we missed our March Notes from the Flower Field. March arrived in a blur of seed sowing, seedling care, and that "everything's waking up at once" feeling… and before we knew it, we were straight into April!

If you missed our February edition, you can still read it here:
Notes from the Flower Field — February 2026

🌿 A lovely midweek evening out

Last Wednesday we had the pleasure of giving a talk to Helensburgh & Gareloch Horticultural Society — and what a warm welcome you gave us. Thank you so much for such a lovely evening (we came home buzzing!).

We're now proud members and really looking forward to being part of the society — learning, sharing, and celebrating all things growing with you.

🌱 The Great Seedling Audit of 2026 (and why it made us laugh)

Before Jeanette would allow us to sow one more thing, we decided we needed to get organised and do a proper seedling audit…

Not including what we sowed last year (and what's already growing in the field), we discovered we currently have 1,133 seedlings at different stages of growth. Yes — one thousand one hundred and thirty-three wee lives depending on us. 😳😂

It was a bit of a daunting exercise because our seedlings are everywhere — spare bedrooms, warm kitchen floors, windowsills, the summer house, polytunnel, cold frames… you name it. But it was so worth doing, because we could finally see what was romping away, what needed pricking out, and where we were short.

Which meant (you guessed it)… more seeds were sown yesterday — around another 400. The season always starts with hope… and a mild sense of chaos!

🧩 April is basically "Seedling Tetris"

If you grow, you'll know this stage well — April is the month of juggling. Our seedlings are in and out constantly: covered and fleeced, opened up and exposed, shuffled about for light, warmth, airflow… it's like playing Tetris every day to give them the best possible conditions for growth (with Scottish weather keeping us on our toes!).

🧱 Soil blocking: our latest obsession (and a total game changer)

We've also properly fallen in love with soil blocking. It's been a total game changer for us — space-saving, efficient, and the seedlings seem so happy for it. If you've never tried it before, we really recommend giving it a go (we're converts!).

🌸 Waking up the dahlias + spring favourites on the way

We're in the middle of waking up the dahlias — one of our favourite jobs, because it feels like you're bringing summer into the room a wee bit early.

And as the month unfolds, we're so excited for what's just around the corner: tulips, anemones, ranunculus and narcissi (we've missed them so much), plus the start of our hardy biennials like sweet rocket and sweet william — proper cottage-garden favourites.

🧱 "Haud It" & "Daud It" to the rescue

Home Farm really is a family effort. Our husbands (aka "Haud It" and "Daud It") have been a huge help behind the scenes — filling beds with compost ready for planting out, and even creating more beds in our gardens for perennials. The glamorous side of flower farming is mostly… shifting compost and building things. 😄

🦔 Two new visitors (thanks Hogwatch!)

We've also taken in two more hedgehogs from Dawn and her team at Hogwatch. They're very active around here — which we absolutely love — and we're delighted to be able to give them a safe place while they're being supported.

🐝 Bee update

The bees are properly starting to wake up now too. We've spotted more activity on the brighter days — that gentle hum that makes the whole place feel alive again. It's one of those small seasonal signs that lifts your mood instantly.

🌦 A wee dreich spell… but the season's still coming

We'll not pretend otherwise — it's been a bit dreich. The colder, greyer weather has meant the season's moving a wee bit slower than usual, and some flowers are running a week (or so) behind where we'd normally expect them to be.

That said, we've still had plenty of lovely stems for our pre-booked weddings, and it's been a joy seeing spring colour start to build again in the beds and tunnel.

And the best bit? If all goes to plan, next week we'll be offering our Spring Bunches — full of beautiful tulips, narcissi, and other seasonal spring bulbs, gathered and conditioned with love here at Home Farm. Keep an eye on our socials (or just reply to this email) if you'd like us to pop you on the list.

💐 April weddings + seasonal reality (and why we're proud of it)

We've had some lovely weddings and still have some weddings coming up in April, and this year the season is feeling a wee bit behind — the weather hasn't been quite as sunny, so some varieties are running about a week (or so) later than we'd normally expect.

Because we're committed to keeping things British-grown and seasonal, there are times — especially early in the season — when we may supplement our own flowers with stems from other Scottish and British growers, always with the wedding couple's approval.

We love being part of a growing momentum that's championing local flowers, and we're proud members of Flowers Grown in Scotland, alongside the wider UK movement through Flowers From The Farm. It feels like more and more people are choosing home-grown, not flown — and we're here for it.

🌿 Behind the scenes with Flowers Grown in Scotland

We've also been busy in the background as part of the Flowers Grown in Scotland working group, helping to gather information for the Scottish grower census. It's a really important piece of work that will help us raise awareness of Scottish-grown flowers, better understand our industry, and strengthen future efforts to secure funding and support for local growers.

🌿 A wee magazine moment

And speaking of that momentum… the first ever The Flower Farmer magazine landed on our doorstep and we honestly could not put it down. It's created by Sofie Stewart of Hazel & Bee flower farm (Sussex) and it's exactly what our industry needed — thoughtful, inspiring, honest, and packed with experience. A magazine written by flower farmers, for flower farmers, with contributions from so many brilliant growers and makers.

It left us feeling hugely inspired — and very grateful to be part of this community.

🌸 Monthly flower deliveries start next week (we can't wait!)

The best bit of spring (for us!) is that fresh flowers are back — and our monthly flower deliveries begin next week. We genuinely can't wait to start sharing the first stems of the season with you.

If you'd like to explore the monthly flower delivery options, you can do so here:
